Best 10 Crystals for Beginners

Rose Quartz: Love, Trust, Healing

Rose Quartz is a great place to start for any beginner witch or collector of crystals since it is the crystal of self and unconditional love, you can’t really go wrong by surrounding yourself with this stone. Of course you can use this to attract romantic love in your life however it can also be used to stimulate inner healing and is a very comforting stone to have around when working through trauma or crisis. As it is a constant reminder to love and be gentle with yourself as you move through whatever it is you are healing from. It can also be used to reinforce existing relationships to restore or strengthen any trust or harmony that may need attention. It can be a fantastic healer since it comes from a place of unconditional love, it soothes and creates a pathway to release painful memories and feelings that no longer serve you.

Tiger’s Eye: Protection, Mental Health, Clarity

Historically, Tiger’s Eye has been used as a protective stone that was worn as a talisman to ward against ill wishes and curses. So as a beginner, Tiger’s Eye is a pretty safe bet to use in any type of situation where you feel as though you might need a little extra protection. Additionally, since it is a fantastic ward against ill wishes, it can also be used to protect yourself from the negative thoughts you may have toward yourself; helping with depression and intrusive thoughts.

Amethyst: Healing, Protection, Balance

Amethyst is one of the best, multi-use stones next to Clear Quartz. It works not only as an equalizer, creating balance in the mind and body, but also as a healer, protector, mental stimulator, and an attractor. Amethyst will help dispel confusing emotions and thoughts, while helping catalyze clear and rational thought by pushing away the negative vibrations and leaving room for personal growth and understanding.

Citrine: Abundance, Positivity, Balance

Citrine is a fantastic starter stone for a couple reasons; first of all, it operates at such a high vibration that its one of the few stones that does not need to be cleansed. So, if you’re first starting out and not yet in the routine of cleansing your crystals after using them for a while, Citrine is probably a good place to start. Additionally, Citrine is a stone of abundance, so if you’re looking to bring something positive into your life, it’s a great crystal to work with. Citrine absorbs negative energy and grounds it so that it doesn’t affect the wearer as much and in turn creates balance in the body and mind. In addition to bringing external positive things into your life, it can also be used to increase the positive emotions you feel on a daily basis, raising self-esteem and self-worth.

Clear Quartz: Healing, Energy Amplifying, Versatile

Quartz is one of the best crystals to have in your arsenal beginner or not. It is the most powerful healing and energy amplifying crystals on the planet due to its unique structure. So, not only is it fantastic to use in healing, but since it will amplify any intention you put into it, you can charge it to serve any purpose you desire. As long as you continue to reinforce that intention, it will continue to hold and amplify into the universe until you decide to stop, or change the intention.

Black Tourmaline: Defense, Protection, Balance

Black Tourmaline acts as a particularly powerful energy shield for whoever possesses it. It defends by pushing the negative energy away from itself like a magnet would another magnet of the same charge; this is why it’s great to have if you find yourself in a toxic or stressful situation. It will help you maintain your internal balance by not letting the chaotic energy in. Black Tourmaline is also a great stone to use to grid your house against negative energy to create a safe space inside the perimeter.

Selenite: Calm, Purification, Cleansing

Selenite is a very calming stone that can be used in meditation and crystal cleansing. The vibration of Selenite is so high that it happens to not only be another crystal that does not require cleansing at all, but it will cleanse other crystals and tools that are put near it. Like Black Tourmaline, Selenite can also be used to grid your home, but it’s purpose is less to repel and block negative energy by keeping it outside the grid and more to create a calming space within the perimeter. If you are collecting crystals as a start to any sort of practice in witchcraft, I’d highly suggest gridding your house with both Selenite and Black Tourmaline to create a safe space for yourself, away from other influencing energies.

Turquoise: Stabilizing, Balance, Strengthening

Turquoise is a great stone for anyone who suffers from depression, anxiety, or panic attacks as it is not only a very protective stone, but it also acts as a strengthening force in life. It can help take an attitude of being a victim and transforming it into the energy of a warrior who fights to overcome circumstances that are attempting to bring them down. Since it is such a balancing stone, it really helps with creating an inner calm and peace that you can fall back on regardless of the circumstances.

Jade: Cleansing, Filtering, Confidence

Jade is considered a highly cleansing crystal and is used not only to filter out negative thoughts and self doubt, but also aiding in the body’s filtration of toxins out of the body. If you are feeling at all sick, Jade is a pretty safe bet to act as a catalyst for your body to be able to do what it already does best. It will also create a calm, focused state of mind so that your brain can focus on making decisions that it might have trouble with otherwise, promoting self-sufficiency.

Carnelian: Moving On, Positivity, Stabilizing

Carnelian is great for anyone who might have issues with mood swings or being grounded in reality because it helps us focus on the present moment and what needs to be done. It banishes emotional negativity and aids us to see that strong negative emotions don’t serve us or anyone else especially while making large and important decisions. Since it is extremely focused on removing emotional negativity, it is a fantastic crystal for overcoming abuse of any kind as it helps us process the emotions surrounding those events and moving forward in a positive way.

One of my favorite books for all of my crystal needs is Judy Hall’s “The Crystal Bible”, not only does it have in depth descriptions of what each crystal is used for, but it also has explanations of what each crystal shape and type means for its use. I would not suggest reading this book cover to cover, but if you happen to be looking for a reference book to get information about crystals you have or are thinking about getting, it is worth it I think.

Did I miss any crystals that should be included in the beginner list? Which ones do you use in your daily practice? Let me know!
