Please Excuse My Rant

on

Most of my work experience has been customer facing; at least in some capacity, whether that be direct customer service or tangential. The really frustrating thing about customer service is that it doesn’t matter how well you know the subject you’re talking about, it doesn’t matter how nice you are, the customer will always be right. Even when they’re wrong, they will “always be right” and as a customer service representative if you don’t tread carefully you can get yelled at for just trying to do your job.

I am at a point in my life where I’m sick and tired of having people try to tell me I have no idea what I’m talking about. What’s the point of having a college degree and years of experience if people are just going to tell you that you’re wrong anyway? It’s never the people who have the same level of education or higher either, it’s always people who think that they’re right simply because they want to be. In customer service positions you don’t get to tell them that they’re wrong, or treating you poorly because it’s all part of the “customer service experience”.

That kind of job is fine for some people, but I’m tired of it. I just want to do my job without having to pander to what I think people want to hear from me. I want what I produce to be enough. Of course there’s a certain level of “playing the game” that you have to do in any sort of job, but customer service is an entirely different level.

I think I’m a pretty personable human being, I will go out of my way to make sure that people are alright, to make sure everyone is having a good time, and I am cursed with “resting nice face”. So truly it’s not a lack of trying. I’m just so tired of bending over backwards for people who will always find something wrong with how I did it. It might be unrealistic and it might be naive of me to say but I want to do something where I use my skills to produce a product and not have to subject myself to the abuse of those just demanding something of me.

This is one of the many reasons I’m so grateful for everyone who’s been supporting me as I try to figure out what direction I want to go. It really means so much to me, so a big thank you to everyone who’s been a part of this journey thus far!
